Google has recently introduced Google Hangout to replace Google Chat. But, before even introducing the new feature, Google had a habit of saving the chat logs on either your G-mail inbox folder or sent mail folder and its still the same.

There’s two ways you can deal with it to remove chat logs from sent mail or inbox folder : either go off the record or create a filter to specifically deal with it.

Going off the record : When you go off the record, no chat logs of your conversation is saved. That means, you will not be able to view chat history at all. If that’s what you’d like to do, you can go to the Hangouts/Chat settings and remove the tick mark from “Save Hangout History”.

Creating a filter to deal with it : Gmail filters can be used to manage your emails in an easy way. If you would like to view the chat history later on but keep it away from Inbox or Sent Mail folder, then this is the way to go.

Login to Gmail. Click on the little arrow at the end of the Search bar.

Gmail Show Search Options

Now, we are going to create a filter.

On the new pop-out window, under Search select “All Mail”

Under “Has the words” enter : is:chat. Then, click on “Create filter with this search”.

On the next pop-out, you need to select what you want to do with the chat logs.

The best thing to do here is to put a tick mark on “Skip the Inbox (Archive it)” and “Delete it”.  If you wish to delete all the existing chat history mails saved in your inbox/sent mail folder, put a tick mark on “Also apply filter to..”.

Click on Create Filter.

The chat logs will no longer be saved on your Gmail folders. You can still view chat history by opening the chat/hangout window of each user.

Note : Gmail does not actually use “folder”, it uses “labels”. There’s a difference between the two.
